Is a Man your Financial Plan?

I remember one of my favorite aunts said before she died that, "I've been waiting on a man to provide a nice house for me all this time when I could have done it myself years ago." That always stuck with me. So, that's the discussion for tonight. What are you putting on hold by waiting on Prince Charming? A man is NOT a financial plan. And here are two reasons why:

1. You can master your finances, accumulate wealth and abundance, and create the life you're waiting for someone to bring to you. So what are you waiting for? Are you waiting to buy a house? Are you waiting to switch jobs? Are you waiting to take that trip? Are you waiting to move overseas? If the pandemic has taught us anything, it's that we can no longer wait to do what we want to do. What's wrong with already having a house when you meet your love? If he already has a house, now you have two. You can sell on or rent one. You have options. What if the new Boo is near a new job opportunity or in the new city or country that you're hesitant to move to? And when you meet him you'll be in a much happier headspace because you're living out your dreams. These are just a few examples of what's possible if you are honest about what you want and courageous enough to make the decisions to get it.

2. You have to be an active participant in your financial life, whether you're single or your partner pays all the bills. How many horror stories have we heard about women who never managed the finances or household bills and their lives are in shambles? There's Larry King's wife, Tisha Campbell, and Mary J. Blige to name a few. If you're lucky, you have someone who is money savvy. But, you may have a partner that is just really bad with money. Regardless of whether you work inside or outside of the home, you need to be an active participant in the financial decisions for your household and your business. Do you know if your name is on your partner's beneficiary documents? Do you have a current will or trust? Do you have a savings account in your name or retirement fund? Do you have the bank account numbers that are used to pay the household bills? Do you know how much your monthly bills are each month? When life happens, you must be prepared with the knowledge and skill set to manage your money.

I ask a lot of questions and I hope you work on knowing the answers. A man is not a financial plan. No one has to come and save you. You can master your finances just like you've mastered so many other areas of your life. So share with me, what are you waiting for? And what are you working on?
